OPGW OPGW is designed to be installed on transmission and distribution lines to carry voice, data and video communications. This particular type of cable is placed at the highest point on power utility high voltage structures were they perform two functions. First of all functions OPGW cable act as an earthing conductor, i.e. conduct short circuit currents that result from faults in the electrical system to earth and protect the transmission line from lightning. Furthermore it protects the optical fibers from external forces and harsh environmental conditions, like extreme temperatures, wind and ice loads. By combining these functions in one cable OPGW considerably reduces pressure on high voltage towers.
