Power Solutions

LS Cable & System has world-class technology in power cables. It is capitalizing on the world-best technology to produce (ultra) high voltage underground cables, submarine cables and super-conducting cables.

LS Cable & System produces accessories for each of these main groups of cables as well. These include outdoor termination, joints, transition joints, beach joints GIS connectors and others. You can find more details on the accessories in the product section of the website.

We also provide installation services for the joints and terminations, supervision on cable laying and as SAT testing of the installed cables. Please contact us for more details.

Ultra high voltage underground cables

For the (ultra) high voltage underground cable we can provide cables that comply with the relevant international and national standards. For the Netherlands for example we have been providing these cables to Tennet for various projects 110 KV as well as 380 KV.

The most commonly used cable type these days is the XLPE insulated type cable.

XLPE Description
The basic material for XLPE is polyethylene, which is chemically transformed to cross-linked polyethylene (XLPE) through the cross-link reaction of organic peroxides. The cross-link method for polyethylene was developed in the United States during the 1950’s and has since been continuously developed for application to higher voltages. Higher voltages are increasingly being required, and the 500kV XLPE cables have already been commercialized.

XLPE cables are available in both AC as well as DC versions.

Conductor types
At present, copper (Cu) and aluminum (Al) are the main materials for XLPE conductors.

  • Copper (Cu)
Copper (Cu) conductors have advanced electrical features, processability and economic efficiency. Therefore, they are used for the majority of underground conductor materials. Significantly, the purity of electrolytic copper needs to be 99.96%~99.86%. (max size 2500mm2)

  • Aluminum (Al)
As aluminum is about one-third lighter than copper it enables easier handling. Its electrical conductivity is about two-thirds of copper but it is more economical. Because of these features, Al is the most widely used material following copper. (max size 2500mm2)

Benefits of XLPE
Plastic insulation is widely used in advanced nations due to its outstanding insulation, easy routing, connectivity and maintenance. Thanks to the development in cross-link technology, XLPE insulation cables can be applied to higher voltages. Recently, XLPE cables have been completely replacing OF cables. The benefits of XLPE are its lightweight, thermal characteristics, low routing costs and low material costs.

Functions and types of metal screened cables
The main objective of screening in energy cables is to shield the electric current. Other functions include safety by earthing, return conductor for fault currents in the case of ground relay or phase faults, and impact and chemical protection for armored cables. Screening can consist of wires, tapes aluminum sheath, lead sheath or combinations

We produce XPLE cables to customer standards. A brochure with standard type XLPE cables can be found here (XLPE.pdf). Please contact us for any specific questions.

Superconducting Cables

Superconductive cables are the eco-friendly, next-generation transmission system that enables large amounts of electricity to be transmitted with high efficiency using lower voltages compared to high-voltage underground cables. They have high market potential and knock-on effects that could present a new paradigm for present-day electrical systems.

Furthermore, when the joint technology for superconductive cables is fully developed, current substations can be converted to small-size switching stations and fewer new substations will need to be built. And in the future, superconductive cables may replace extra-high voltage large capacity overhead conductors as well. Such benefits will contribute to greater social acceptance and enhanced convenience to citizens by helping resolve the NIMBY attitude toward unpleasant facilities.

Products in the superconductive cable system include superconductive cables, middle and terminal connection boxes, cooling systems to keep the superconductive cables at an extra-low temperature of -200 degrees, and control systems. Liquid nitrogen is used as the refrigerant.

Types and purposes
The superconductive cable system available for distribution and transmission cables. Transmission cables can be AC or DC systems.

  • Superconductive distribution cable systems: AC22.9kV 50MVA and AC22.9kV 120MVA
    • Replace multiple-line underground distribution cables with single-line superconductive cables
    • Replace transmission cables between substations with superconductive distribution cables
  • Transmission AC system: AC154kV 600MVA and 1GVATr
    • Replace multiple-line underground distribution cables with single-line superconductive cables (Replace and newly built saturated and worn-out lines)
    • Reduced lines between substations for simplicity
  • Transmission DC system: DC80kV 500MW
    • Large capacity, long distance transmission

AC Submarine cables

LGCE has been involved in the supply of the Offshore export cable for Windmillpark Luchterduinen (150 kVAC) and Windmillpark Norther ( 220kV) up to know. We are actively involved pursuing the project for the Tennet offshore connectors for the new parks to be build alongside the Northsea coast.

AC submarine cables are widely used for mid-to-long-range application at medium-to-extra high voltage grade.  LS Cable & System can offer both single- as well as three-phase AC cables. They can be easily connected to the onshore AC power grid. Commonly, extruded cross-linked polyethylene (XLPE) is used as conductor insulation for reliable operation and maintenance, simple connection and repair, and due to its advanced chemical and electrical features.

Types and Purposes

  • Submarine cables for power connection
    • Connection among countries
    • Connection between islands and mainland
  • Submarine cables for wind power
    • External network submarine energy cables (offshore substation to onshore substation)
    • Internal network submarine energy cables (between offshore wind turbine power generators and -offshore or onshore substation) (these are referred to as “infield” or “array” cables).
  • Oil & Gas
    • External network submarine energy cable (offshore oil & gas platform to onshore substation)
    • Internal network submarine energy cable (between offshore oil & gas platforms)

Benefits

LS Cable & System has the capability to produce long-length AC submarine cables (without the need to joint two lengths offshore), as the company possesses facilities and technology required to manufacture, factory-joint, layup (three cores), and store long-length MV and (E)HV AC submarine cables. XLPE insulated submarine cables hold many benefits, most notably, there is no risk of environmental contamination, as is given when an oil-insulation based cable is damaged.

Main features

  • Mid-to-long-distance transmission (≤100km)
  • Maximum voltage: 400kV
  • Maximum conductor size: 2,500mm2 (single core)

DC Submarine cables

The demand for DC submarine cables is continuously increasing due to (ultra) long-distance grid connections among countries and power transmission from offshore wind power generation hubs to the mainland. Low attenuation power transmission is feasible through HVDC submarine cables.

LS Cable & System can produce extruded cross-linked polyethylene (XLPE) and mass-impregnated non-draining (MIND) DC submarine cables. We were the first Korean company to develop and implement an HVDC 250kV MI submarine cable system.

Types and purposes

  • DC MIND submarine cables
    • Reliable, established technology (since 1950)
    • Power transmission over (ultra) long distances (100km-1,000km)
    • Good space charge effects

  • DC XLPE submarine cables
    • Power transmission over long distances (100km-300km)
    • Lightweight compared to MI submarine cables (for equal capacity)
    • Easy operation and maintenance

Benefits
LS Cable & System has the capability to produce ultra-long length DC submarine cables (without the need to joint two lengths offshore), as the company possesses the facilities and technology required to manufacture, factory-joint, and store long-length MV and (E)HV DC submarine cables.

DC systems can be connected to power grids of different frequency and voltage, so there are no electrical or technological limits when e.g. interconnecting different countries.

Main functions:

  • Power transmission over ultra-long distances (100km-1,000km)
  • Maximum voltage: 500kV (MI submarine cables), 320kV (XLPE submarine cables)
  • Maximum conductor size: 2,500mm2
